Millennium Dome
London
2002
This existing arena designed by Richard Rogers completed in 2000 was an enormous venue space with a vast stretched fabric dome shell extending well beyond the building’s footprint which was left with undeveloped space under its canopy. What initially appeared to be a disadvantage having to contend within the constraints and limits of the set structures envelope, instead it was an intervention within an existing structure’s voided areas making it possible to create unexpectedly exotic spaces.
Sections surrounding the stadium were blank volumes and shapes allowing inventive fillers around the stadiums wide-ranging chasms of the sheltered interior. The resulting outcome is in an entirely new complex of sequential diverse programmes varying in size and shape, with themed activities, shops, restaurants and cafés, as a British response to the American shopping mall.
