Astor Court Apartment
NYC
2007 – 2008
A transformation from a conventional residential dwelling into a less formally restrained, establishing a generous social mixing space for living, dining and cooking. Retrofitting the historic service quarters allowed uniting three separate volumes for an open more flexible and adequate scale, with an L-shaped floating counter bar, full-height walnut wood built in wall and illuminated translucent glass shelf cabinets. This approach allows the focus to fall on the combinations of materials and the detailing of the junctions, the pairing of fired black granite and brushed aluminium, Wisconsin walnut and illuminated diaphanous glass, for example, playing with ideas of similarity and contrast in terms of texture and tone.
